You will always be hit for at least one damage. Blocked damage is reduced to 5-25%, and armor piercing damage can also be blocked which makes shields invaluable against many of the tougher monster types.

While not much recommended since it gives less protection than any of the actual armor skills (and the loss in defense from lack of armor), the unarmored skill does afford you some mitigation and a rather high +20% bonus to dodge.Įquipping a shield gives a 10% base chance to block attacks that increases by 0.5% per Shield Block skill level, up to 60% at level 100 skill but slows your attacks by 400ms. A higher heavy armor skill mitigates more damage per point of defense. Heavy armor offers the best mitigation, but has a -100 movement speed penalty in combat and a -20% penalty to dodge, making you more vulnerable to armor piercing attacks. A higher medium armor skill mitigates more damage per point of defense. Medium armor mitigates more damage than light armor does, but has a -50 movement speed penalty in combat and has no bonuses or penalties to dodge. The first 30 times you're hit by a mob, you'll gain 3xp per point of damage.A higher light armor skill mitigates more damage per point of defense. But in exchange you gain a +10% bonus to dodge, and there are no movement speed penalties. Light armor affords fair protection, but not as much as medium or heavy armor. For more info (like theorycrafting and defense caps) see the Armor page. Damage mitigation is similar between armor types at first, but pulls further apart at higher skill levels. At the start of the official timeline (AC 1000, or thousand years after the crowning of the first Emperor of Thyatis, in the Thyatian calendar), they are locked in a struggle resembling that of the Cold War, and several published high-level modules have their territorial disputes as a backdrop (notably CM 1, M1, M2, and M5).These skills help mitigate incoming damage to your character. Thyatis has a historic rivalry with the Alphatian Empire, and the two imperial powers devote much of their energy and attention to each other. Thyatian settlers have colonized part of the The Savage Coast and also the Heldannic Freeholds, which are ruled by a religious order devoted to the Thyatian-descended Immortal Vanya. In its long history, Thyatis has ruled other lands, including Traladara (which became The Grand Duchy of Karameikos), the islands of The Kingdom of Ierendi, the southern half of The Emirates of Ylaruam, and the city of Oceansend in The Kingdom of Norwold.

Because of its political geography, Thyatis can best be described as a thalassocracy. The total land area of the Empire is approximately 800,000 square miles. The Grand Duchy of Karameikos is ruled by a Thyatian nobility, but the Empire's territories consist of the western half of the Isle of Dawn, the island realms of Ochalea and the Pearl Islands, and the Thyatian Hinterlands on the southern continent of Davania, in addition to its mainland territories on Brun, which are the smallest of the Empire's territories by geographic size, but the most heavily populated and developed of them. The Imperial Bureaucracy as described in Dawn of the Emperors is clearly inspired by that of the British Empire, as is, at least in name, one branch of the Thyatian Armed Forces, the "Retebius Air Corps" (RAF), which consists of cavalry on flying mounts (Pegasus, Hippogriffs, Griffons, Sphinxs, Rocs, and Dragons). The Emperor himself is akin to that of the Byzantine Empire (as is the capital city's placement on a major strait). It is governed by an Emperor and an Imperial Senate as per the classical Roman Empire, but enfranchises a feudal noble class similar to that of the Holy Roman Empire. It is on the southeastern coast of the continent of Brun, situated between the trade lanes of the Sea of Dread to the south and the Sea of Dawn to the east, alongside a canal ("Vanya's Girdle").Ĭonceptually, Thyatis is a mixture of different parts of the various historical Roman empires. Thyatis (the city) is the capital of the Empire and the largest city on Mystara.
